Le Cottage: Style AND Substance

On Monday, we went to Le Cottage with our friends from L'Esplanade, and had a fantastic evening. Of course, being there with the owners of our hotel definitely had its perks - the owner of the restaurant greeted us all personally, and we definitely got the royal treatment. However, I got the impression that the service is excellent regardless. 

First of all, the wine. I don't know what we were drinking aside from that it was a Bordeaux, but it was truly phenomenal. For appetizer, I had the tuna sashimi; it came complete with fried ginger, a treat I will definitely be looking to repeat. The tuna had been sliced very thin, and then rolled on itself, making a perfect tasty bite. Steve shamelessly mooched off my appetizer instead of ordering his own. For main course, I ordered the scallops, and they were tasty as well, though not quite as memorable as Steve's filet, which I "shared" with him every time he got busy talking to people. 

Several people ordered the escargot, and it looked amazing. There were six escargot in their individual cups, each topped with a little piece of toast, plus there was a lollipop of foie gras. Really, a lollipop - foie gras at the end of a stick, standing tall on the plate. It was excellent. I was starting to really wish I had ordered one of the several foie gras appetizer options. 

The highlight, of course, was dessert. We split two souffles, chocolate and grand marnier. They were crazy good. I have a feeling I had more than my fair share of both. 

The food was excellent, but the remarkable aspect of Le Cottage was the presentation of food. Every dish was artfully turned out, with some crazy highlight, like a beaker of froth or the foie gras lollipop. Impressive across the board. 

In theory we should have saved Le Cottage for the end of our trip, as it's at the far end of the boulevard and we're working our way down systematically, but this was a rare treat of great people and amazing food, and well worth the digression.
